The Transition Gap & Cliff Effect
For many individuals with autism, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and related exceptionalities, the transition into adulthood can bring significant changes in available services, opportunities, and support systems. While many structured programs and educational supports are available during childhood and the school years, families often face challenges identifying continued opportunities after individuals transition out of the school system, typically around age 21.
This period, often referred to as the “Transition Gap or Cliff Effect” can leave many individuals and families searching for opportunities that continue to encourage growth, independence, skill development, and meaningful engagement. Access to employment readiness programs, vocational experiences, life skills instruction, and hands-on learning opportunities may become limited, despite the continued need for support and development throughout adulthood.
Bridging the Gap Between Learning and Real-World Opportunities
CBF Academy, a learning initiative of Cedar Bridge Foundation, was created to provide individuals with autism, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and related exceptionalities with opportunities to strengthen practical life, vocational, and employment readiness skills through hands-on and real-world learning experiences.
Our academy focuses on helping participants build confidence, increase independence, develop communication and workplace skills, and explore opportunities that support long-term personal growth and future success. Through structured instruction, applied learning, and supportive guidance, participants are encouraged to develop abilities that can help prepare them for everyday life and future employment opportunities.
A Hands-On Approach to Learning
At CBF Academy, we believe learning is most meaningful when individuals can actively participate, practice skills, and apply knowledge in supportive and engaging environments. Rather than relying solely on traditional classroom instruction, our approach emphasizes interactive experiences that encourage growth, responsibility, confidence, and skill development. Programs and workshops are designed to support individuals in developing practical abilities related to communication, teamwork, problem-solving, workplace readiness, independent living, and vocational exploration. As the academy continues to grow, additional educational and skill-building opportunities will continue to be developed based on the needs of the individuals and families we serve.
Participants may have opportunities to develop skills related to:
- Employment readiness and workplace expectations
- Resume writing and job application support
- Interview preparation and mock interviews
- Communication and workplace interaction
- Customer service and professional behavior
- Teamwork, responsibility, and problem-solving
- Time management and task completion
- Independent living and daily life skills
- Culinary instruction and food safety education
- Leadership and self-advocacy
- Hands-on vocational and real-world learning experiences
- Decision-making, confidence building, and personal growth
